Mauvine grew from a fascination with the colour purple in all its richness and intensity. I wanted the orchids to feel as if they were emerging from a burst of colour rather than sitting quietly in a traditional still life. Layers of mauve, plum, violet and deep magenta spread across the surface with expressive drips, splashes and scattered petals, creating a sense of movement and energy.

The orchids themselves become the calm within the chaos. Their elegant forms and twisting roots weave through the composition, anchoring the painting while the surrounding colour seems to bloom and scatter around them. I love the contrast between the delicate structure of the flowers and the wild, spontaneous marks that surround them.
