The painting shows a magnificently flowering shrub of Peonia lactiflora, also known as the sweet peony, in full bloom in the botanical gardens on the island of Mainau. The flowers of the shrub dominate the picture with their lush, silky petals in a delicate yellow that fades into a soft white towards the edges. Each individual flower seems to glow from within, as if the sunlight were shining through the thin petals. The bush is surrounded by lush green foliage, which stands in stark contrast to the pastel-colored blossoms. The painting technique places particular emphasis on fine details: the texture of the petals, the play of light and shadow and the natural elegance of the plant are at the heart of the composition. It is a tribute to the beauty of nature and the botanical diversity of the island of Mainau.
