Lupins – Hand-Printed Reduction Linocut

Lupins is a vibrant print inspired by a photograph I took in my garden in late spring, when the blooms were at their fullest. Their tall, architectural forms and layered petals caught the light beautifully—something I set out to capture in this piece.

This artwork is a one-plate reduction linocut, meaning a single lino block is used to create the entire image. The design is drawn in reverse, carved, inked, and printed. Then, more of the block is carved away and a new colour is printed on top. This layering process continues until the full image emerges—this one took 10 individual layers to complete.

I've included in-progress images to show how the print evolved with each pass. Each one is printed by hand using professional-grade oil-based inks on lightweight Japanese Hosho paper.

As each print is made by hand, subtle variations make every piece truly unique.

Please note: room setting images are for display purposes and not to scale.

Materials used:

lino, cutting tools, roller, inks, printing press, paper
