Listen to the Sea Speak by Fintan Whelan serves as the conceptual anchor of his solo exhibition at Arise Art Space in Busan.
Rather than depicting the sea, Whelan seeks to translate its elemental presence into movement, light, and sensation. Working horizontally across the canvas, he combines oils, pigments, and varnishes in a fluid, highly responsive process in which control and unpredictability continually intersect.
Deep indigos and rich ceruleans move through expansive fields of white, while delicate metallic-silver veins emerge like flashes of reflected light. Layers swell, fracture, recede, and converge, evoking breaking waves, shifting tides, and the ever-changing surface of the ocean.
The work exists between turbulence and stillness. Its energy is unmistakable, yet beneath the movement lies a quiet, contemplative space—an invitation to slow down and listen beyond the visible.
