The artwork form the series THE AUTHORSHIP OF THE PAST. The colors reminded me of frescoes and book illustrations from the medieval era. It also recalled a famous secular song L'homme armé from the late Middle Ages. It was the most popular tune used for musical settings of the Ordinary of the Mass: over 40 separate compositions entitled Missa L'homme armé survive from the period.
The past is the author of the present. THE AUTHORSHIP OF THE PAST is my Opus 1 - a series of paintings that I painted a few years ago in order to convey that sense of the past in the present. All the paintings are repaintings of my earlier works. I used a plaster instead of a brush. This locked the expression of the brushstroke but allowed the existing texture of the paint to work. It was as if the old painting was choosing its own future image. New layers of paint would hook onto the texture, in some places slipping through, leaving a patch of old work visible. I wanted there to be a dialogue between the old and the new. Interestingly, the themes of the paintings have not changed a lot. They continued to talk about the same things that they were talking about before. But in a different way. As if in ruins, you can see how the old texture has shaped and given direction to the new layers of paint.
The series premiered at Ars Gallery in Vilnius Old Town in January 2018.
