Legend of Callanish (2020) Original Acrylic Painting by Galina Zimmatore

Legend of Callanish is an original mixed media painting inspired by the mysterious ancient standing stones of Callanish on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland.

These remarkable stones have stood in the landscape for thousands of years, surrounded by unanswered questions, history and legend. The site has been linked with the moon and ancient burial traditions, while Scottish folklore tells of people transformed into stone by a witch.

Rather than painting the landscape literally, I wanted to capture the strange, timeless atmosphere of the place — the feeling of ancient stones standing quietly within the landscape, holding stories that may never be fully explained.

Layers of acrylic, charcoal, marker, stencil and collage build texture, colour and movement across the canvas, while the standing stones bring a sense of stillness and mystery.

The painting measures 76 × 61 × 4 cm and is created on deep-edge canvas. It is unframed but ready to hang. The artwork is signed on the front and comes with a signed Certificate of Authenticity.

For me, Legend of Callanish is about mystery, memory and the feeling that some places carry stories far older than we are.
