I came across a postcard I’d had for years of a painting by Matisse. His painting of an open window with view, was painted from the his Atelier in Collioure, France. Fast forward more than a hundred years later, and this exact spot was the upper level of what became our favorite cafe when we lived in Collioure several years ago! I’ve painted variations inspired by Matisse’s over the years, but this time I was after a much less detailed version. Whereas normally I’ve painted the open shutters in blue, and outer walls of the room in a bright color; this time I decided to do it the other way! The difference is quite striking. Painting on a black canvas, I enjoyed leaving the black showing through in areas. The canvas is painted around the edges, so that the painting can be hung, unframed.
