Snow on cooled lava. Two extremes meeting on the same surface — warmth and cold, white and black, life and silence.
This painting depicts a winter landscape where a fresh layer of snow lies across a field of cooled volcanic lava. A self-made texture paste was applied thickly to the canvas, and as it dried, an organic network of cracks and fissures formed — unpredictable, raw and entirely unique. Over this, soft blue-grey and white acrylic evokes the stillness and fragility of snow. Beneath the cracks, the dark black of the lava shows through — present, but covered.
The work captures a fragile balance — the kind that returns again and again in nature. Ice that melts. Lava that cools. Snow that covers what fire has left behind. The two surfaces need each other to form the whole.
Up close, the painting reveals a world of extraordinary detail and depth. From a distance, it breathes both stillness and power.
