Original artwork description
According to legend, an old monk was sailing in a boat and found an icon in the water. This was near the sacred Mount Athos in Greece. Saints dedicated to asceticism and prayer for the world still live on its slopes. Their exact number is unknown. Saints of various nationalities and faiths perform asceticism, renounce worldly life, and devote themselves to prayer for all people, and therefore the world continues to exist. It is believed that when the last righteous person disappears, the world will be destroyed.
The Mother of God holds the Child Jesus in her left hand, pointing to him with her right hand as the Way and Light of the world. In his hand, the Child holds a scroll of the Gospel, but it also represents the life story of the person gazing at the icon and praying. The scroll contains all good and evil deeds and also symbolizes the fate of the believer in the hands of God. Flanking the Mother of God and the Child are the Archangels Michael and Gabriel.
