Original artwork description
La route sera longue — triptych of hand-drawn imaginary maps, ink on tracing paper, 2021.
The style is essentially an imitation of the French 1:50,000 topographical map, 1922 type.
A fairly large city lies at the confluence of two rivers and appears to be largely abandoned. The roads, railways and almost all the bridges have been cut off.
Very little of this infrastructure appears to have been conceived with any functional purpose in mind.
The words that guided the composition of these spaces are taken from a prose poem by my friend Philippe Despeysses. I reproduce them here:
« La route sera longue, trop longue peut-être, avant de devenir rocher dans la mer, au bout du bout, à la limite du monde, là où il devient plat.
Oiseau léger devenir, planer au gré du vent, suivre les vagues qui dansent, farandole qui tourne sur elle-même autour de la terre. »
