'Kraken Mare' depicts a day on Saturn's moon Titan. A spot of cathartic isolation, only 1.2 billion kilometers from Earth.
Reminiscent of George Seurat's paintings of Parisien bathers, it evokes the same tranquility. Where Seurat's paintings contrast the serenity with the rise of industrialisation, this painting instead contrasts the scene with the possibilities of the far future.
To our eyes, Titan's landscape is both comfortingly familiar and wildly alien. Lakes and rivers of liquid methane carve a path between mountains of water ice. Our bathers have found a home here in the distant reaches of time. Humanity's curiosity and innovativeness allowing them to do what humans do best: doing very little.
Sitting on a jetty, one bather casts his gaze on Titan's sister moon, Enceladus. Could life also prosper under its icy shell?
