King of Colentina (2017)Oil painting
by Dominic Virtosu
£2,518.07
Original artwork description
As you must have noticed, this artwork depicts a horse on a throne in a tagged alley-way between two buildings: an absurdly funny and impossible idea.
Part of a continuing series of horses, this piece is centered around the idea of the absurd - a sense of weirdness and ambiguity exudes through-out this painting as the artist uses the metaphor of the king-horse to illustrate this scene of lavish luxury in decrepitude.
"Beginning in 2015 I have had this idea of using horses in absurd or impossible situations," said Dominic Virtosu, "for this composition I was inspired by the proliferation of gambling and casino facilities in the neighborhood where I was living. It seemed that all young and middle-aged men where spending their money gambling and placing bets in a desperate attempt to escape poverty. This idea was worth exploring as it describes a mentality and addiction problem within our society."
