'But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.' - Galatians 5:22-23
'Joy' is an abstract expressivist painting, rendered in oils. A cascade of tumbling colour, painted in impasto, denote a dynamic sweep across the canvas, moving from what might be sky to sand. Whilst the palette includes vibrant colours, there are neutrals and even some black to ground the work. The motion within the work signifies the way that joy is not static and desires to extend to the other.
The abstraction invites the viewer to interpret the essence of joy as they see it - there are no dictating focal points or set figurative components. The eye is invited to sweep along with the cascade and scan across the detailed palette knife work, whilst the brain can join in with the high frequencies of the colours used, which are known to elevate mood.
