Painting of Johnny Mercer (1909-1976) was a prominent American lyricist, songwriter, and singer, celebrated for his significant contributions to the Great American Songbook. Born in Savannah, GA, he moved to New York City in the late 1920s, where he began his career in music. Mercer co-founded Capitol Records in 1942 & wrote over 1,500 songs, many of which became timeless classics, including "Moon River," "Days of Wine and Roses," "Hooray for Hollywood," & "Autumn Leaves."

He was known for his clever & engaging lyrics, often infused with his Southern roots and experiences. He received 19 Academy Award nominations for Best Original Song, winning four times. His collaborations with composers like Henry Mancini & Hoagy Carmichael produced some of the most beloved songs in American music history. Mercer was also a successful recording artist and a key figure in the music industry,
