Original artwork description
All of my hyperrealism portraits have a story behind them. The story looks at the past, the present and glimpses at the future. This story had a tragic ending.
“Joe’s Wall” is an original oil painting on canvas of Joe Crow. Joe was a homeless guy living on the streets of Winchester. I met Joe many times and painted him twice. He always smiled, always laughed, he was one of those characters who welcomed anyone into his world. Despite this I could always sense so much pain and fear. I could sense that he was internally fighting so many battles yet he was desperate to keep things together, desperate to make people feel comfortable in his presence.
Once I primed the canvas I aimed to create a painting that showed a joyful Joe fade into a wall. I knew that Joe felt invisible, almost a part of the wall that he sat in front. I wanted the painting to shout and scream at those in power who do not help the homeless and who are happy for the homeless to be invisible, to fade away.
One year after I created this portrait I heard that Joe had passed away.
