Artwork Statement

Medusa was in fact once a beautiful maiden renowned for her stunning beauty. Her allure caught the eye of the sea god, Poseidon which resulted in an encounter in the sacred temple of Athena.

Athena, who felt disrespected that her temple had been used for such an act punished Medusa and transformed her into a Gorgon as a way to humiliate her.

Once transformed, Medusa was shunned and feared by society. Isolated from the world, she resided in a remote location, often depicted as a desolate cave. Although she retained the ability to feel pain and sorrow, her monstrous appearance and deadly powers rendered her a tragic figure.

This work captures Medusa at the point just after the transformation and serves as cautionary tale that monsters are not born, they are created.

“Augury” series statement

This series of works weaves together themes of mythology, science fiction, esoterica and the occult into old master inspired fantasy dreamscapes. These works represent something ancient and modern, drawing inspiration from the renaissance and baroque periods. The method used requires an underpainting in earth tones with translucent layers of oils to build the overall colour scheme. Details are added and refined as the work progresses.

Materials used:

Oil paint on gallery wrap canvas
