Istanbul (Turkish: İstanbul), also called or called Constantinople, Stambol or Stambul, is a Turkish city located on the Bosphorus Strait, the former capital of three great empires: Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman. After the founding of the modern Republic of Turkey, Ankara was declared its capital. Nevertheless, Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey, and is its cultural and economic center.
