Original artwork description:

The adversities and the threatening situation during the COVID pandemic has affected most of us, who survived, in deep ways. Losing near and dear ones to the Coronavirus, the anxiety, the panic, the pain and overall the loss of human touch due to the ‘social distancing’ protocol drove many of us to look within ourselves and build an island of isolation within us. In that isolation, silence reigned. Silence was not only an inward journey but also manifested in the real world. The honking of cars were silenced, people did not talk to each other for fear of transmitting the virus, and neighbourhoods became calm and quiet. Everyone was in their own isolated island. Many people were unable to deal with this isolation and they faced mental health challenges. During this ordeal, how many of us did reflect on the isolation faced by minority groups in our countries on a regular basis? How many from the majority realized that they have continuously abandoned people into such isolation over the years for being different from the norm? Being a queer person, I have felt this isolation all through my life. Being LGBTQ+ has driven many to seek escape in such isolation or a life of supressed desires. It was a spiritual journey where some of us found solace in getting in touch with our heart and mind and the courage to fight back and reclaim our space in this world. Through this process hope resurfaced even in the most difficult of times and brought peace to the mind. This painting explores my personal journey through such isolation and silence.
I have used watercolour, pen and ink and graphite pencil to create this artwork.
