This painting was from a balcony looking out. The trees look to me like Georgian ladies reluctant to step into the water lest they reveal their ankles. Initially there were a lot of plants in pots in the foreground on the ledge, however painting them out made the composition much more pleasing as abstract contrasting shapes.
