The painting shows a single blue-violet iris flower in the centre. The iris rises majestically from a sea of plant leaves, twigs and berries, which merge to form a mosaic-like background. The warm colours of yellow, orange, brown and blue-green form a vivid contrast to the cool blue-purple of the iris. The scene is slightly stylised. In the background, the various plant elements come together to form a harmonious whole. The leaves and branches branch out in elaborate whirls. Isolated berries glow tantalisingly amidst the greenery.
