Ipswich Waterfront - A Glimpse of the Past
Step back in time to the historic waterfront of Ipswich, Suffolk, between 1900 and 1907, in this atmospheric original watercolour.
The painting captures the character of Ipswich's busy Wet Dock at the beginning of the 20th century, with traditional Thames sailing barges moored alongside the quays. These distinctive flat-bottomed cargo vessels were once a familiar sight throughout the East Coast waterways, carrying goods between ports such as Ipswich, Maldon and Colchester. Their tall masts and warm, weathered sails create a wonderful focal point against the expansive sky.
The historic warehouses and harbour buildings provide a wonderful backdrop to the scene, evoking a time when Ipswich was a thriving centre of maritime trade.
Curving through the foreground are the dockside railway tracks, part of Ipswich's extensive dock tramway system, which was used to move freight and goods between the ships, quayside warehouses and the wider port. The combination of sailing barges, railway tracks, traditional harbour lamps and pedestrians gives the scene a fascinating glimpse into everyday life on the waterfront over a century ago.
I have used layered watercolour washes and expressive brushwork to capture the soft light, weathered buildings and atmospheric reflections, with warmer tones in the boats and architecture contrasting beautifully against the cool, expansive sky.
A nostalgic celebration of Ipswich's maritime heritage, capturing the atmosphere of a working waterfront at the dawn of the 20th century.
