Original artwork description
This work from the Intervals series features a gull (gabian, as it is known locally in Marseille), an emblematic presence of Mediterranean coastal life, placed within a structured geometric environment. Repeated forms create a visual framework where the figure emerges as a point of movement and contrast.
The gull is rendered using simplified, architectural lines that echo the geometry of the background while remaining distinct from it. Its outstretched wings introduce a sense of suspension and quiet momentum, holding a moment between motion and stillness.
Rather than telling a fixed narrative, the piece focuses on rhythm, spatial balance, and the dialogue between repetition and presence. The gull becomes both subject and interruption, a familiar Mediterranean figure suspended within a constructed visual field.
The Intervals series builds on ideas first explored in my earlier Origami works, extending them toward a more restrained and contemplative visual language, where form, colour, and placement define the experience. This work was inspired by a visit to the Frioul islands, off the coast of Marseille, where eroded limestone landscapes, intense Mediterranean light, and the familiar presence of gulls shaped the memory behind the composition.
This contemporary geometric bird painting combines graphic structure with organic subject matter, balancing abstraction with a strong sense of place.
