Rouen Cathedral is a place where light shapes not just what we see, but how we feel the world. In this watercolour, I explored the poetry of light as it dances across Gothic façades, dissolves into shadow, and lingers in the air.
A remarkable feature is the “Butter Tower” (Tour de Beurre), funded in a playful way: during Lent, worshippers were allowed to eat butter in exchange for donations to its construction. Interestingly, this is why the right tower appears slightly yellow — a historical trace of those unusual contributions, which puzzled me while I was painting.
Through fluid watercolour, the cathedral becomes a vessel of atmosphere — a meeting of past and present, where colour and form invite quiet reflection on time, space, and light.
