A weekend exploring Hull, wandering streets evocative of another time, snippets of childhood, a fascination with red brick and terracotta chimney stacks, a fascination with symmetry and Victorian dimensions. The day is mine, to explore as I wish, and I find myself in the Avenues, a Bohemian-feeling expanse of roads and alleys, baked under a hot sun in a wide sky. The tiles, the bricks, the walls absorb the day’s heat, releasing their nectar of tar and creosote, intoxicating and Proustian scents. An ice cream van’s jingle, with a bitter-sweet pang, the hum of traffic on the main roads nearby, and the breeze that carries a tang from the Humber and the North Sea. A lovely gift, a great souvenir of Hull.
Texture has been added to create extra depth. The canvas is 0.5 inches deep and can therefore hang without a frame if wished.
