_______

Seascape of Brittany, France.

I am fascinated by the coexistence of two temporalities: the infinitely long time of the Côte Sauvage’s granite, standing still against the onslaught of time, and the infinitely short time of the sky and the wind. For me, painting this landscape is an attempt to freeze the ephemeral (the shape of a cloud, the reflection of the sun on the grass) onto the immutable surface of the rock.
The presence of the house and the path humanizes a landscape that would otherwise possess a grandiose austerity. I was inspired by this threshold: the precise point where human life flirts with the harshness of the ocean and the rock. The dirt path serves here as a poetic transition between the dizzying edge of the shore and the safety of solid ground.
The shifting Atlantic light sublimates this dialogue between Man and the Elements: it strikes the facade of the house, which becomes the luminous focal point of the canvas, while in counterpoint, the rocks sink into warm, russet shadows.
This painting is a meditation on our presence in the world. Along this path, we can feel a solitude in the face of immensity which, far from being frightening, reveals an infinite serenity.

Materials used:

This painting is painted with professional grade oil colors on a primed canvas. I prepare myself my canvases to create a texture specific to my painting needs and to insure them maximum longevity.
