Original artwork description
This is the second of my circular series named "Hortensia" which is the Latin name for the Hydrangea plant.
I painted a graduated colour wash of Farrow & Ball colour "Calamine" to white on watercolour paper, and then painted squiggly lines all over in gold ink, I then cut hydrangea shaped petals in various sizes and edged each one in black and dark grey.
Each flower is shaped so that the edges curl upwards enhancing the 3D effect of the whole piece.
The flowers are arranged in a circle on heavy watercolour paper with the larger, darker ones raised up on varying heights on tiny foam board plinths.
The height of the flowers decends out from the centre getting lower at the edges.
The result is a highly textured modern relief design revealing individual flowers on closer inspection, and different shadows are cast, and light reflected from the metalic paint depending on the direction of the light.
The painting is framed in a white glazed (Perspex) deep box frame.
Materials used:
Farrow & Ball emulsion, gold ink and watercolour paper on foam board in a white glazed (Perspex) deep box frame
