A dried branch with seed pods of the honesty plant inspired this work. The autumn light through the studio windows illuminated the translucent pods, sparking a series of sketches and studies. I selected three small canvases that I had previously prepared with an imprimatura in primary colors.
This is no.3: On this bright yellow canvas, the windows are only visible in planes of color, but the transparent seed pods are painted in great detail. As I painted the seed pods and refined the details, I kept pondering the plant’s curious names: in Dutch Judaspenning — Judas’ coins, a symbol of betrayal — while in English simply Honesty.
