A dried branch with seed pods of the honesty plant inspired this work. The autumn light through the studio windows illuminated the translucent pods, sparking a series of sketches and studies. I selected three small canvases that I had previously prepared with an imprimatura in primary colors.
This is no.1: on this blue canvas, the window frames and the tree beyond are suggested in broad strokes. As I painted the seed pods and refined the details, I kept pondering the plant’s curious names: in Dutch Judaspenning — Judas’ coins, a symbol of betrayal — while in English simply Honesty.
