A Short Story for “Holy Night”.
It was another cold night on Christmas eve, but I had a duty to keep a family tradition alive. I had planned to do this weeks ago but the snow storms had been pretty rough. Especially the wind. Tonight was so so calm. Nothing stirred. The night sky was lit by a billion stars. The northern lights haunted the starlit night sky like wisps of Christmas glitter curtains strewn across time itself. This tradition was one my Mom and I cooked up decades ago. Every year right before Christmas, Mom, Dad, and I would load up a pack horse and ride out onto the range a short piece from our cabin. We would find the best tree we could find and decorate it. We always used Mom’s favorite Pink and turquoise ornaments. We would then set her small Nativity decoration I made in Sunday school beneath the tree and say a prayer. Giving God thanks for giving us Jesus to pay for our salvation. Dad passed about 20 years ago so this tradition had even more meaning for both of us. Mom passed away about 7 years ago. Each year I do this small act of Thanksgiving and remembrance to make my Christmas more complete. Tonight's air was magical. It was a silent and HOLY night. I had lost Mom's Nativity scene, but I found her Three cross tree topper. As I placed it on the tree there seemed to be a plus in the northern lights. "Hello Mom and Dad", I thought to myself as I took a seat by the fire and sipped my hot coffee with a little of Da'ds favorite Buffalo Trace Bourbon whiskey. "Merry Christmas! I miss and Love you both!" Tomorrow will be Christmas Day. I will have to go visit my Ole Man's Snowman somewhere along Chena River... but that's another story.
