Original artwork description
Ahhhhh, Collioure; the tiny town discovered in about 1900, by Henri Matisse and some of his cohorts. Several emerging Parisian based Painters traveled to join Matisse at his bequest; assuring them it was the most magical place set in the Mediterranean Sea. Well, they began painting collectively, creating a new “style” that received jeers and derogatory press at the next “Salon” ir exhibit, held in Paris. An Art Journalist who questioned whether this new style could even be considered “Art”, coined the term “Fauvists”- translated “Wild Beasts”; his label for this group of painters. But because of that incidence, Collioure retains its reputation as an “Art Colony” drawing hundreds of thousands of people each year, from all over the globe. I was fortunate to live thee several years ago, and can never get back often enough. This view of the little town- and including the Ancient Chateau- from across the bay, is a perspective I’ve painted countless times. I never tire of the subject, and enjoyed bringing in some new mediums to this version. The canvas is painted around the edges so that the piece can be hung unframed if preferred.
