Painting of Harry James (Mar 15, 1916 – July 5, 1983) was a prominent American jazz musician and bandleader, best known for his exceptional trumpet playing & leadership of a successful big band during the swing era. Born in Albany, Georgia, to circus performers, he began his musical journey at a young age, learning drums and trumpet from his father. By the age of 12, he was already leading a band in the Christy Brothers Circus.

James gained fame in the late 1930s after joining Benny Goodman's orchestra, where he became part of the celebrated "powerhouse trio" of trumpeters. He formed his own band, Harry James & His Music Makers, in 1939" . His band was notable for featuring Frank Sinatra as a vocalist early in Sinatra's career.

Throughout his career, James was known for his bold, brassy playing style & technical proficiency, which influenced many future musicians. He continued to perform & record until his death from cancer in 1983, leaving behind a rich legacy in jazz and popular music
