Guardian of the Caucasus (2023) Original Mixed-media Painting by Gela MIKAVA
65 x 80 x 3cm (unframed)
£1,100.37
Original artwork description
Guardian of the Caucasus is a contemporary figurative painting from the ROOTS series, inspired by Georgian and Caucasian cultural heritage and traditional men's dress.
A solitary male figure stands frontally in a stylized white chokha, the traditional Caucasian garment distinguished by its characteristic cartridge holders across the chest. His monumental shoulders, restrained expression and almost monochromatic appearance give the figure a timeless and symbolic presence.
Rather than presenting traditional clothing as historical documentation, the artist transforms its distinctive forms into a contemporary visual language. The figure becomes an expression of ancestry, dignity, cultural memory and the enduring connection between identity and heritage.
The predominantly white composition is punctuated by strong black graphic details and subtle traces of color, creating a balance between minimalism and expressive texture.
Original artwork, 80 × 65 cm.
