In my new large-scale work (145 x 200 cm), I wanted to convey precisely this sense of festive anticipation. In the foreground are golden gondolas, sparkling in the rays of the setting sun. The use of gold leaf is no accident: gold symbolizes the very magic that transforms an ordinary boat into a fairytale carriage.
The multicolored mooring bollards set the rhythm, like notes on a stave, and the outlines of the eternal city are discernible in the hazy perspective. This is Venice as I experience it—vibrant, monumental, and endlessly alive.
