This painting is from a brand-new series called "Forest Totems," which came about very naturally. While walking through the forest, my attention is often drawn to strange trees or stumps. Usually, they stand out from their surroundings because of their shape or color. For many, this might seem like a completely insignificant and unnoticed motif, but once I start sketching and really look closely, it reveals its beauty. Often during the process, I find myself thinking about its life story... In this way, the act of drawing becomes a ritual, and the object is elevated and become some kind of "totem".
Tomas Stanaitis is a new-generation Lithuanian painter.
His works are most often inspired by themes of nature and landscape. As he says:
“As an artist, what I enjoy most is observing. Whether it’s a landscape, still life, or portrait—there’s always something fascinating to look at closely. I try to see the color and shape. If it’s a landscape, I aim to feel and convey the sense of space. I often emphasize color as a way to highlight the essence of painting itself.”
A direct visual experience is extremely important in his creative process, which is why he always works from life. He combines the plasticity of drawing with the depth of painting. Tomas believes that the answers he seeks in his art can be found in nature—not within the four walls of a studio.
His works are held in private collections in Miami, London, Brussel.
