Original artwork description
Freigeist is an intense close-up portrait in which face and hair merge into a shared linear structure. Long dark strands sweep across the forehead, eyes, and cheeks like a veil, simultaneously concealing and emphasizing the face. This layered effect gives the work its distinctive tension. The portrait is frontal enough to feel immediate and direct, yet partially obscured, leaving it deliberately unresolved and open to interpretation.
The composition is driven by striking contrasts. Neon pink, turquoise, blue, broken whites, and darker lines shape the eyes, nose, mouth, and hands in clearly defined zones. The fingers placed in front of the face enhance the sense of intimacy and self-protection. At the same time, the painting radiates a luminous quality, as the cool and light tones stand out vividly against the darker background. This creates a powerful visual presence and a strong impact even from a distance.
Painterly, Freigeist remains open, expressive, and alive. Splashes, drips, visible brushwork, and layered surfaces prevent the image from becoming smooth or static. In the areas of the hair and hands in particular, the work reveals how strongly it is shaped by lines, crossings, and flowing movements. The face remains recognizable, but is never fully revealed. It is precisely this interplay between direct frontal presence and partial concealment that makes the portrait memorable and distinctive.
With its square format of 100 x 100 cm, Freigeist feels concentrated, contemporary, and visually commanding. The painting draws its strength equally from expression, colour, and linear structure. As an original work by carographic by Carolyn Mielke, it represents contemporary portrait painting with neon-like colour intensity, a striking close-up perspective, and a compelling balance between openness and withdrawal.
