Free Soul, 2023

I painted Free Soul in Hamburg in 2023, although the emotional impulse behind the work emerged during a trip I took along the Colombian Caribbean coast in September of that same year. While traveling there, I revisited El coronel no tiene quien le escriba (No One Writes to the Colonel) by Gabriel García Márquez, a novel whose quiet atmosphere of waiting, dignity, and stubborn hope stayed deeply with me.

The rooster I depict is a fighting cock of the kind traditionally used in cockfights throughout the Caribbean, animals often tied to betting, pride, and survival. In García Márquez’s novel, the rooster represents the colonel’s last hope, the fragile possibility of economic salvation in a life marked by poverty and endless waiting. The colonel refuses to sell the bird, clinging to it as a symbol of dignity and resistance.

In my painting, however, the rooster is not preparing to fight. It appears in motion, almost escaping the darkness, as if dissolving into the air. Its body glows with intense reds, oranges, and dark iridescent feathers, emerging briefly from the surrounding shadow before vanishing again. I wanted the figure to feel fleeting, like a presence that appears only for an instant.

In this sense, the rooster also evokes the letters that never arrive in the novel: messages endlessly awaited but never delivered. Like those missing letters, the bird becomes something fugitive, an image of expectation, hope, and desire that constantly slips away. It appears, moves, and disappears.

Through this painting, I wanted to capture that fragile moment between hope and absence. The rooster becomes a metaphor for longing itself, like a promise that never fully materializes, yet continues to live in the stubborn persistence of the one who waits.
