This work was inspired by Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s famous fountain in Piazza Navona, Rome, created in 1651 to symbolise the reach of the papacy across four continents. I was captivated by the way water, sculpture, and sunlight animate the piazza, and translated that vitality into loose washes and expressive brushwork. The painting celebrates both the history of the monument and the everyday life that continues to flow around it.
