I’ve paused at this exact spot in the tiny Town of “Villefranche Sur Mer”, a zillion times. I’ve photographed it, I’ve sketched it on site, and finally after thirty years living in France, this scene has made its way to canvas!!!! Villefranche is the next door neighbor to Nice, but by contrast to the Big, Loud, Hectic, Crowded City, Villefranche Sur Mer could not be more pristine, calm, unhurried, or uncrowded. I often train the half hour from my home in Menton, climb the steps from the port, to spend a couple of hours wandering in the tiny residential streets perched high above the Mediterranean. Most of the time I pass hardly a soul, and bask in the only sounds being the chirping of birds, or of shutters being opened or closed.

In the case of this composition I stayed very true to my photographs, scarcely having to embellish the spot in terms of Color or Romance. This canvas is painted around the edges so the painting can be hung unframed, if preferred..
