Feathered Tongue (2019) Original Charcoal Drawing by Emmanuel Akolo

58.42 x 45.72cm (unframed) / 58.42 x 45.72cm (actual image size)

£453.12

I created Feathered Tongue using graphite and charcoal to explore the power of the things we say and the things we keep inside. The drawing shows a close-up of a mouth with a small bird sitting on the tongue. I wanted to show the delicate balance between our voices and our thoughts. The bird represents a message or a secret that is ready to fly out into the world.
By using only black and white, I was able to focus on the small details, like the texture of the skin and the feathers of the bird. This work is about how words can be light and beautiful, but also how they can feel heavy if we do not speak them. It is a study of honesty and the quiet strength it takes to share our truth with others.
