He is celebrated for his significant contributions to the Harlem stride piano style, which laid the groundwork for modern jazz piano. Waller's career spanned from the 1920s until his untimely death in 1943, during which he became a beloved figure in the jazz and swing eras.

Waller was known for his lively performances that combined music with humor, making him a standout entertainer. His most famous compositions include classics like "Ain't Misbehavin'", "Honeysuckle Rose," and "Squeeze Me." He was a prolific songwriter, credited with over 400 songs, many co-written with lyricist Andy Razaf.

Despite his comedic persona, Waller was a serious musician with a deep understanding of music theory, having studied classical piano and organ.
