Original artwork description
A single word carved in stone that stops a whole pastoral world in its tracks: Et in Arcadia Ego takes up the legend of the shepherds of Arcadia, a scene Nicolas Poussin painted twice, where shepherds stumble on a tomb bearing that inscription, I too exist in Arcadia, and understand for the first time that death has always been here with them.
Poussin's versions gave the discovery a whole landscape to unfold in, figures pointing, tracing the letters, working the realization out together in the open air. Maureau strips all of that away. What's left is a single figure and a sober, internal version of the same shock, awareness happening quietly inside a body rather than announced across a group.
Arcadia stops being a place in this version and becomes something closer to a state of mind, one where beauty was never actually separate from the mortality it seemed to promise an escape from.
