Et In Arcadia Ego takes up the legend of the Shepherds of Arcadia. This pastoral scene was treated by Nicolas Poussin twice.
Shepherds living in the wonderful Greek region of Arcadia discover a tomb in the countryside bearing the inscription "Et in Arcadia Ego" (I also exist in Arcadia), thus realizing that they are mortal.
Nicolas Maureau gives a sober version, where awareness is internal.
