Original artwork description
• Emily I is the first artwork in a two-piece series dedicated to Emily. This contemporary portrait combines highly detailed graphite drawing with vibrant botanical illustration, creating a composition where realism and nature merge seamlessly. Emily is portrayed frontally, meeting the viewer with calm, direct eyes that immediately become the emotional focus of the artwork. Her face is distinguished by a delicate constellation of freckles, softly shaded skin, and naturally full lips, while loose strands of dark hair frame her features with understated elegance.
The monochrome portrait is interrupted by blooming pink flowers and vivid green leaves that emerge from the lower left of the composition, climbing across her shoulder and continuing delicately onto her cheek. Rather than concealing the figure, the floral elements become an organic extension of the portrait, balancing the precise graphite rendering with fresh colour and botanical detail. The exposed shoulders and collarbones enhance the natural simplicity of the pose, giving the work a sense of honesty, youth, and quiet femininity without relying on overt sensuality.
The contrast between finely rendered graphite textures and richly coloured blossoms creates a contemporary figurative portrait that celebrates natural beauty, individuality, and the subtle dialogue between the human figure and the botanical world.
