I loved the light and the softness of the colour. I have done this walk hundreds of times, from the New Town, downwards, towards Stockbridge. But today I was struck by the northern, Scottish light, a softness, a pastel hue. The light that has always shone here, the light that reflects off the estuary. The stone is golden, turning grey and brown when it rains. I pass some shops, their fronts bright and neat. A smell of freshly ground coffee, a hint of cinnamon, the nostalgic wisp of wood smoke.
This work is full of realism and full of light. A wonderful souvenir of the Athens of the North, of Scotland's capital city. The canvas is 0.4 inches deep and can therefore hang without a frame if wished.
