Earl is a fine and handsome example of a British (sometimes called English) Bulldog. Bulldogs became very popular as pets in the 1800's when they (the original breeds) where no longer required to work and certain blood sports were banned. Most likely a cross between a type of Mastiff (of ancient Greek origin) and the Pug (brought to Europe from China in the 16th century) they've become a much loved and recognizable symbol of what it means to be British. This beast is strong and dependable, with a serious and sometimes thoughtful expression that hides a playful nature. Bulldogs are very popular companions in America and France too, where local traits and variations of the breed have developed.
