This is a painted original gelatin silver print by American artist Jerry De La Cruz (b 1948, Denver, CO). It is from a photo taken and developed by the artist in his darkroom and then used as a canvas for the addition of oil paint over the photo. The work is 7.5” high by 9.25” wide and is framed to a size of 13.25” high by 14.75” wide. The subject is a ballet rehearsal showing a ballerina and her male partner. The ballerina is up on pointe in arabesque, one leg high behind her and her arms both lifted up. She wears traditional ballet garb, pointe shoes, tights, a spaghetti strapped leotard and short black skirt. Behind her is a portable ballet barre. Crouching underneath this barre with his two hands grasping the barre behind his bowed head is the male ballet dancer, somewhat obscured in shadow. Over the black and white photograph, the artist has added black oil paint creating textures, highlights and movement. The palette is almost all monochrome in the original gray tones of the original black and white photographs and black oil paint except for the perimeter of the work which has some pale-gold edging. The work is titled “Disposition One.” It is in excellent condition and signed on the front lower right. The mounted work with black museum board matting is framed under glass (plexiglass for shipping) with a black gloss metal frame, with hardware ready to hang, as shown.
