Artwork description
On a bright moonlit night, a group of devils dance …
The idea of dancing with the devil implies risky, dangerous, or morally ambiguous activities. It is a concept rich with dark symbolism. Visually, this phrase evokes the idea of an intimate, perilous engagement with danger or immorality. The “dance” element suggests a voluntary, active participation or collaboration with something harmful or unethical, characterised by a series of steps or actions that are intricate and often deceptive in their appearance. The “devil” symbolises the embodiment of evil, danger, or temptation — representing an inherently risky force or entity or morally corrupt. The act of dancing with such a figure proposes a flirtation with danger or moral compromise. On the other hand, perhaps dancing with the devil could thrilling, terrifyingly exhilarating. As with most of my work, I leave it to the viewer to come to their own conclusions about dancing with the devils.
This print is an etching and aquatint made in 2022 on a copper plate. It is printed on Somerset Velvet, a heavyweight 300 gsm handmade paper from St Cuthbert's Mill in Somerset. The print is in a limited edition of 75 and signed by the artist. The image size is 20 x 30 cm on a paper size is 32 x 42 cm.
