Cyclamen I (2021) Photograph by Cornelia Weber

In this series of four close-up studies of cyclamen, the focus is on the flowers’ shape and sense of movement. I remember that my grandmother — a great admirer of cyclamen — kept countless plants on her windowsills. In winter, near the windows, it was cool and filled with light — perfect conditions for cyclamen. She cared for her beloved flowers with great devotion. And I remember watching her as a child, carefully removing the faded blossoms from the plants.
For a very long time, I hardly noticed cyclamen anymore, until I rediscovered them while photographing a feature for a magazine. Because I associated them with my grandmother, they carried a certain nostalgic charm, filled with childhood memories. Yet I quickly realized that it was the grace of the blossoms themselves that truly captivated me — and that, without their dominant dark green leaves, they were remarkably photogenic.
To keep the flowers’ intense colors from overpowering the elegance of their forms, I chose to present these images in black and white. Who would have thought that the old-fashioned cyclamen could appear so modern?
