I began painting cowgirls after moving from Manhattan to a tiny village outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2020. I painted Cowgirl Rising when I was well into this series of paintings, having painted dozens of women of the West during preceding years. Having just moved to a new studio in Galisteo, I wanted to make a small jewel of a portrait that captured prototypical modern cowgirl -- tough and ready for anything -- but with a timeless, vintage feel that evoked ruggedness of the American Southwest. This painting is oil on linen and currently unframed.
