Cowboy life involved a variety of tasks, including:
Herding cattle: Cowboys drove cattle from one watering place to the next, often on horseback. They also guarded against predators, straying cattle, and stampedes.
Horse care: Cowboys helped care for horses in addition to herding cattle.
Fencing and building repair: Cowboys repaired fences and buildings.
Frontier town establishment: Cowboys sometimes helped establish frontier towns.
Entertainment: Cowboys sang songs, played the guitar or harmonica, and wrote poetry for entertainment.
Cowboys typically wore large hats, boots, and bandanas. They sometimes wore chaps to protect their legs from cactus needles and rocky terrain.
